Plan the Drainage Route: Identify where the water collects and determine the best route for the drain. The drain should slope away from your home (1% grade, or about 1 inch per 8 feet).
Gather Materials: Collect all the necessary materials and tools.
Excavate the Trench:
Dig a trench about 6 inches wide and 18-24 inches deep along the planned route. Ensure the bottom of the trench slopes away from your home.
Add Gravel Base:
Pour about 2-3 inches of gravel into the bottom of the trench. This will help with drainage.
Lay the Pipe:
Place the perforated drain pipe on top of the gravel, with the holes facing down. Ensure it’s positioned correctly to maintain the slope.
Cover with Gravel:
Add more gravel over the pipe, filling the trench about 3-4 inches above the pipe.
Install Landscape Fabric:
Lay landscape fabric over the gravel to prevent soil from clogging the drain. Fold the edges of the fabric over the gravel.
Backfill with Soil:
Fill the trench with soil, covering the landscape fabric. This can be the excess soil you dug out or additional soil.
Create an Outlet:
If needed, direct the water to a suitable outlet, like a dry well or storm drain.
Test the Drain:
Run water through the drain to ensure it flows properly.
