Approximately 500 sq. ft. per bale (average coverage)
Straw is commonly used as a protective cover over newly planted grass seed to help improve germination rates and establish healthier, more consistent lawn growth. Applied lightly over seeded areas, straw helps protect grass seed from erosion, harsh sunlight, birds, and moisture loss while creating an ideal environment for seed establishment.
As the straw naturally breaks down over time, it also adds organic matter back into the soil, helping improve soil quality and overall turf performance.
Helps Prevent Seed Washout
Protects newly planted seed from being displaced by heavy rain, watering, or wind.
Reduces Moisture Loss
Helps retain moisture around the seed, supporting faster and more consistent germination.
Protects Against Excessive Sun Exposure
Provides light shading to help prevent seed and soil from drying out too quickly.
Discourages Birds & Small Animals
Acts as a protective barrier that helps reduce seed loss from birds and wildlife feeding on exposed seed.
Improves Soil Over Time
As the straw decomposes, it contributes organic matter that benefits soil structure and plant growth.
Apply a light layer of straw evenly over newly seeded areas. The goal is to lightly cover the seed while still allowing sunlight to reach the soil surface.
Recommended Thickness:
No more than approximately 3 inches thick.
Applying too much straw can trap excessive moisture, reduce sunlight exposure, and potentially encourage fungal growth. A properly applied layer should still allow portions of the soil to remain visible through the straw.
