Prevent soil loss on landscaping and construction sites.
UV stabilized polypropylene woven fabric captures sediment and allows water to pass through.
Pre-assembled roll with 4' tall wood stakes.
Stakes are attached every 10'.
Materials Needed:
Silt fence fabric
Wooden or metal stakes (typically 2-4 feet tall)
Hammer or mallet
Utility knife or scissors
Wire ties or staples (optional)
Measuring tape
Steps:
Plan the Location:
Identify the area where the silt fence will be installed. It should be placed downhill from the disturbed area to intercept sediment-laden water.
Measure and Mark:
Determine the length of the fence needed and mark the ground using stakes or chalk.
Prepare the Fence Fabric:
Unroll the silt fence fabric. The fabric should be at least 36 inches high, but you can choose a taller one if needed.
Install the Stakes:
Drive the stakes into the ground at intervals of about 6 to 10 feet along the marked line. Ensure they are firmly in place and at least 1 foot deep for stability.
Overlap Sections:
If your fence requires multiple sections, overlap them by at least 1 foot to ensure there are no gaps.
Backfill:
Use soil to cover the bottom of the fabric where it is buried. This helps prevent sediment from flowing under the fence.
Inspect and Maintain:
Regularly check the fence for damage or sediment buildup. Clean or repair as needed to maintain its effectiveness.
Tips:
Install the silt fence before construction or land disturbance begins.
Consider local regulations regarding silt fence installation and maintenance.
If using a temporary silt fence, it can be removed after the site is stabilized.
